From lotions to sprays and oils, there are literally thousands of products aimed toward accelerating and maintaining your tan.
Designed to protect the moisture levels in your skin, tanning lotions allow pores to open, magnifying your UV exposure for maximum light absorption and helping you achieve a deeper longer-lasting tan.
Not sure which one is right for you? Here are some of the different types of tanning lotions:
After-Tan Moisturizers- These products claim to extend the life of your tan. However, there often are few differences between these tanning lotions and ordinary body lotions. As long as you moisturize your skin, your tan will last longer.
Bronzers- Bronzers can come in many different forms, ranging from cosmetic products to accelerators containing bronzing agents (or self tanning products). These tanning lotions can be used to enhance the look of your tan or simply add color to your natural skin pigment.
Accelerators- Most tanning salons offer and recommend using this type of tanning lotion prior to each visit. There are products designed only for indoor use, whose ingredients will not cloud tanning beds, and others meant for outdoor use only. Outdoor tanning accelerators contain varying amounts of SPF. Although these products will not dramatically affect the results you receive from tanning, they will aid in moisturizing your skin and magnifying UV exposure for maximum light absorption.
Tingle Factor Tanning Lotions- High concentrations of vitamins and natural oils accelerate the microcirculation process of your skin and actually bring blood closer to its surface. This stimulation also forces melanin to your skin's surface. The more melanin available on the surface, the faster the tanning process.
When used, these products produce a light tingling or burning sensation on your skin. Available in a number of different concentrations, from low to high tingle factor, these products are only recommended for use by experienced tanners, who are already dark. Tingle factor lotion can help them break their frustrating tanning plateau. These products are best avoided with sensitive skin types.
Cooling Effect Lotions- Although not as popular as tingle factor lotions, these products are aimed at keeping skin cool during tanning. More often, though, they are used as an after-tanning product that moisturizes skin while also producing a cooling effect.
