Types Of Tanning Beds

Every skin type tans differently. Luckily, there is a different type of tanning bed to meet each individual’s tanning needs.

Some tanning beds produce different combinations of UVA and UVB light, which can impact both the way a tan is achieved and how the skin appears after it has been tanned. This is because greater concentrations of UVB light will produce a deeper, more reddish tan as these light rays penetrate the skin deeper. Tanning beds with higher UVA exposure tend to produce more bronzed tans and typically result in the fewest number of skin burns (as these rays penetrate the skin the least).

Some tanning beds are designed to stimulate a greater production of melanin in the skin, while others focus on darkening the existing pigments, which produces the most visible effects. Still other tanning beds differ based on the placement of tanning bulbs. Some beds will concentrate UV exposure on the face by including face lamps, while others are designed to produce an even overall tan.

One of the latest developments in tanning is the high-pressure bed, which operates much differently than standard beds. Instead of using typical phosphor-coated tube lamps, these tanning beds use small high-energy UV quartz lamps. A precise filter glass fits overtop these lamps, controlling the wavelength of UV light passing through the bed. As a result, the type of UV light emitted is almost completely UVA radiation. Although these beds are usually among the highest priced for tanners, their incentive lies in the production of faster and darker tanning results.

Tanning beds not only differ based on type, but also between brands. Therefore, it is beneficial for tanners who are unfamiliar with the types of tanning beds a salon offers to follow the guidelines specific to the business and begin with a lower exposure time to avoid burning.

How can one tell which tanning bed is appropriate for them? Often times, tanning salons gauge the tanning level of clients based on their skin's appearance (i.e. level of base tan and color of skin pigment) their tanning history and individual results with different types of tanning beds.

Many salons require new clients to complete a short survey regarding their tanning habits and skin history to assess which level of tanning bed will achieve the greatest individual results. As a result, tanning salons often determine a client's maximum tanning exposure time based on a simple scale, which may resemble the one below.

TYPE I - Always burns, sometimes severely. Rarely tans. Very fair skin.
TYPE II - Burns easily, tans minimally or lightly peels. Fair skin.
TYPE III - Burns moderately and eventually will tan.
TYPE IV - Burns minimally and tans well.
TYPE V - Always tans, rarely burns.
TYPE VI - Always tans profusely. Never burns.
